The Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced a temporary shutdown of the Mallam and Achimota Primary Substations due to severe flooding caused by ongoing heavy rains in the Greater Accra region.
The joint decision, announced on 29th June 2026, aims to safeguard lives, protect critical electrical networks, and manage operational personnel risks.
Public Safety and Network Risks
According to a joint press release, downpours have severely impacted critical electricity infrastructure across multiple substations.
Power utility officials noted that the precautionary measure became necessary as water levels posed immediate physical and operational threats to high-voltage equipment.
Officials warned that as long as the heavy rains and flooding persist, power supplies may face additional temporary interruptions in other affected areas to maintain safety boundaries.
Emergency Guidelines for the Public
Residents within the affected zones are urged to exercise extreme caution when navigating flooded areas.
GRIDCo and ECG have instructed the public to immediately report hazards, such as fallen electricity poles, exposed or fallen power lines, or flooded electrical installations, to the nearest ECG office or through verified ECG customer service channels to allow rapid response teams to secure hazardous sites.
Restoration Efforts
The utility companies are continuously monitoring the situation and conducting comprehensive damage assessments on the transmission and distribution networks.
In their joint statement, the corporate communications sections of both GRIDCo and ECG apologised for the inconvenience, assuring the public that every effort will be made to restore power as soon as weather conditions improve and safety parameters are met.
