Patients at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have pleaded for government intervention amid a strike by doctors over the suspension of the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Hundreds have been left stranded as the strike, initiated by the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association (KADA), has paralysed operations at the Outpatients Department (OPD).
While emergency services continue to operate, most outpatient services are shut down, causing frustration among patients, many of whom travelled long distances for appointments.
The strike stems from a dispute between hospital management and the Ministry of Health over the suspension of the CEO, which was ordered after the hospital froze new admissions at the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Centre to address overcrowding.
Management of the Hospital argued this measure was necessary to ensure patient safety, as doctors deemed the suspension of the CEO unjust.
As tension escalates, patients are calling on both sides to negotiate and restore full services at Ghana’s second-largest referral hospital.
