President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Minister for Finance to immediately release GHS 300 million from the Contingency Fund to finance urgent flood relief and long-term mitigation efforts.
The directive follows hours of unusually heavy rainfall that triggered severe flooding across parts of Accra and several other communities within the country’s southern sector.
According to an official statement issued by Presidency Communications on Tuesday, 30th June 2026, the state’s security apparatus has also been fully mobilised to assist in ongoing emergency operations.
Funding Allocation and Emergency Response
The GHS 300 million financial intervention will be split equally to tackle both immediate humanitarian needs and infrastructure vulnerabilities.
A total of GHS 150 million will finance urgent relief efforts for flood-affected persons and communities in the southern sector of the country, while the remaining GHS 150 million will be spent on flood mitigation measures aimed at reducing the incidents of future flooding.
Alongside the financial package, President Mahama has ordered the immediate deployment of personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces and the Police Service.
These military and police forces are tasked with working in tandem with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and auxiliary security services to bolster rescue and relief operations currently active across the capital city.
Earlier in the day, the President conducted an aerial tour of the submerged areas to personally evaluate the full extent of the devastation.
Following the assessment, Mahama announced a raft of comprehensive steps intended to safeguard affected residents and prevent further environmental disasters.
The official communique, was signed and released by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, who serves as the Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications.
