A tragic road accident at Woadze, near Kpeve, has claimed three lives and left 17 others injured on Friday morning, 22nd May 2026.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Peki Fire Station staged a swift rescue operation to extricate dozens of passengers who were trapped inside a severely damaged commercial vehicle.
The crash involved a Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicle, registration number GR 8231 C, which was travelling from Abotuase to Ningo in the Greater Accra region.
The vehicle was carrying a total of 20 passengers, comprising 11 men, five women, and four children.
Emergency responders successfully rescued 17 victims from the wreckage, including all four children.
However, three adults—two males and one female—were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Peki Fire Station deployed rescue teams immediately after receiving a distress call at 9:53 a.m.
A coordinated effort between multiple emergency agencies followed the extrication, with the Ghana Ambulance Service units from Afadjato and Juapong transporting the 17 injured survivors to nearby medical facilities, while the Ghana Police Service Kpando Divisional Command managed the scene and conveyed the bodies of the deceased.
The victims and the deceased were taken to the Kpando Government Hospital and the Peki Government Hospital for medical treatment, preservation, and further identification.
The exact cause of the crash remains unknown, and local police have launched an official investigation into the incident.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Volta Regional Public Relations Officer for the GNFS issued a stern reminder to the public, urging motorists to strictly observe road safety regulations and avoid excessive speeding to prevent further loss of life on the country’s highways.
