The Oforikrom Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region has handed over five major abandoned infrastructure projects, including its stalled administrative headquarters, to contractors to ensure their speedy completion.
Work on the key developments halted under the previous administration, forcing the Municipal Assembly to operate out of rented premises for several years.
Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) Anwal Sadat Ahmed noted that ongoing lease expenses have severely strained the Assembly’s finances, sinking millions of Ghana cedis into operating overheads.
The focal point of the revived initiatives is the main Municipal Assembly administrative block.
Commenced in 2019 and currently at roughly 70 per cent completion, the project has been handed over to a new contractor, BB Viderk Limited, under an eight-month completion schedule.
The additional legacy developments included in the handover comprise the MCE’s official residence at Kantinkrono, a municipal court facility at Boadi, a judicial officer’s bungalow at Emena, and a 14-seater public toilet facility at Kantinkrono.
Funding for the resumption of work was secured through the release of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), from which 20 per cent has been explicitly earmarked to complete stalled legacy projects across the municipality.
Speaking at the official handover ceremony, Mr Ahmed assured contractors that funds are already secured in the Assembly’s bank accounts, pledging that interim payment certificates will be honoured promptly to prevent further delays.
He also commended President Mahama for prioritising the continuation of stalled infrastructure, emphasising that governance must remain a continuous process regardless of political transitions.
Mohammed Awal, Project Manager for BB Viderk Limited, confirmed that the main administrative building will be completed on schedule, provided interim payments are released on time.
