Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has officially stepped down from his role following Ghana’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, calling for sweeping institutional reforms to safeguard the future of the national game.
The veteran Portuguese tactician announced his departure after Ghana’s Round of 32 exit against Colombia, engineering a reflective parting message that balanced pride in the team’s progress with a stern reminder of the work ahead.
Queiroz emphasised that sustained international success for the Black Stars depends heavily on strengthening administrative structures rather than relying solely on pitch talent.
”The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch,” Queiroz stated.
“Success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect, and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent.”
He urged football authorities to prioritise long-term planning, meticulous tournament preparation, and robust investment in grassroots player development.
Reflecting on the World Cup campaign, the former Real Madrid and Manchester United manager described the tournament as a critical learning curve, noting that “you either win or you learn.”
While acknowledging the collective disappointment of missing out on the deeper rounds of the tournament, Queiroz maintained that the team accomplished a core objective: rebuilding Ghana’s international reputation.
”To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage,” he added.
Queiroz extended his appreciation to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) leadership for the opportunity to manage the four-time African champions.
”To my President and Board, thank you for the opportunity to serve the Ghana National Football Team. It was an honour and privilege,” he said, while also praising his playing squad and technical staff for their “courage, commitment, and dedication” throughout the campaign.
