Aggrieved traders and residents of Aputuogya in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti region have staged a massive street protest against their forced eviction from a vital local trading hub.
The demonstration was sparked by a directive ordering traders to vacate the land to make way for the construction of a new shopping complex by a private developer.
Clad in red and black attire, the angry demonstrators marched through the principal streets of Aputuogya to express their fierce displeasure over the eviction exercise.
According to the leadership of the traders, the targeted site is not just a commercial centre for petty traders but also serves a social purpose as the community’s funeral grounds and a venue for major public gatherings.
Speaking to the media during the protest, the Assembly Member for the Aputuogya Electoral Area, Mr Samuel Adu Amankwah, expressed deep concern over the development and called for the suspension of the project and proper consultation.
