The Toase District Court has struck out the assault case involving a teacher and a female student from Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School who were filmed in a violent physical altercation on campus.
The presiding magistrate dismissed the case after urging the teacher, the student, and their respective families to pursue an amicable out-of-court settlement through reconciliation.
The incident gained national attention after a video went viral on social media, sparking widespread public outrage.
In the footage, the teacher, identified as Eric Buernortey Apaflo, is seen repeatedly striking the female student before lifting her and slamming her to the ground.
The public backlash following the video’s release led to Mr Apaflo’s subsequent arrest by the police.
Speaking to the media after the court proceedings, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Prof Elvis Binney, welcomed the court’s directive.
He cautioned the public against premature judgment.
”We are calling on civil society organisations, commentators, and members of the teaching community to refrain from making prejudicial comments or issuing threats against the teacher,” Prof Binney stated, emphasising the need to let the family-led reconciliation process proceed without external pressure.
School authorities have not yet commented on whether internal disciplinary actions will be pursued against either party now that the legal case has been dismissed.
