A heavy morning rainfall caused the Wewe River to overflow its banks today, leading to the flooding of the primary campus link between the halls of residence and the lecture halls at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The flood disrupted vehicular traffic, obstructed major pedestrian walkways, and interrupted the university’s academic schedule for several hours.
The rising water overtopped the bridge over the Wewe River, rendering critical roads and pathways impassable during peak morning hours.
As a result, thousands of students were stranded, and commercial drivers heading to neighbouring communities such as Kotei, Ayeduase, Emina, Boadi, and Apemso diverted from their usual routes to alternative roads.
In response, university security personnel were deployed to manage the situation, safeguard students and commuters, prevent access to high-risk zones, and assist in navigating safer pathways.
The university also dispatched large shuttle buses capable of crossing high water levels to transport stranded students back to their residences or to scheduled lectures.
By early afternoon, the overflow waters receded, allowing private and commercial vehicles to resume use of the primary university roads, as students were able to use pathways to lecture halls.
