Police in the Ashanti region have arrested a 19-year-old suspect, Ahmed Mustapha, following a swift response to a robbery in Asabi that left a man hospitalised with severe machete wounds.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:20 a.m on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, when the Asokore Mampong night patrol team was alerted during routine operations that an adult male had been robbed and left unconscious near the Presbyterian Church in Asabi.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers spotted the suspect, who fled and attempted to hide inside an uncompleted building.
Police pursued and apprehended Mustapha shortly after.
A search of the suspect led to the retrieval of the victim’s stolen mobile phone and a machete, both of which were retained as evidence.
The victim suffered multiple machete wounds to his forehead, neck, and left hand.
He was rushed to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Hospital for emergency care.
Officers who visited the victim at approximately 5:30 a.m confirmed that he had regained consciousness, was in stable condition, and remained under medical observation.
Mustapha is currently in police custody assisting with ongoing investigations, according to a statement signed by Supt Godwin Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit for the Ashanti Regional Police Command.
