The Ashanti regional branch of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has denied media reports alleging that the Ashanti Regional Minister is involved in illegal electricity consumption at a property linked to him, describing the accusations as a malicious attempt to tarnish his reputation.
In a press statement issued on Friday, 5th June 2026, the NDC clarified that the property in question—located in Ahinsan—is currently rented by the party for operational purposes and does not belong to the Regional Minister, nor is there any illegal power connection on the premises.
The controversy erupted following claims by journalists at Kumasi-based Wontumi Radio, who alleged that the Regional Minister was “stealing electrical power” at the facility.
“The house is not the property of the Honourable Regional Minister,” stated Isham Alhassan, the NDC Ashanti Regional Organiser and Regional Political Coordinator, who signed the release.
“The Minister has no ownership, management, or control over the electrical installation or operations of the premises. Records and bills from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) can confirm the true owner.”
Addressing the presence of utility officials at the location, the NDC confirmed that ECG staff did visit the Ahinsan house, but maintained it was a “routine inspection and not the result of any illegal activity.”
The party insisted that all power consumed at the operational hub is fully metered, billed legally, and that no laws have been breached.
The tenancy agreement for the property was initiated by the NDC ahead of the 2024 general elections and remains active, according to the statement.
In a direct pushback against the media house, the opposition party challenged Wontumi Radio to present any verifiable proof of utility theft to the appropriate authorities.
“We challenge Wontumi Radio and any other person who claims to have evidence of an illegal connection to make such evidence public,” Alhassan noted, adding that he is prepared to publicly debate anyone on the facts of the matter.
“If any such evidence exists, it should be submitted to ECG and the relevant security agencies for immediate investigation.”
The statement concluded with a warning of potential legal action if the allegations continue, urging journalists to adhere to professional standards of balanced and factual reporting.
The party emphasised that the Regional Minister remains focused on his official mandate and will not be distracted by political sideshows.
