A devastating head-on collision between a container truck and a passenger bus killed at least 15 people and injured 25 others in the early hours of Tuesday, 2nd June 2026, at Peki-Tsame in the Volta region.
The fatal accident, which occurred near the Peki Senior High School, prompted a major emergency response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), whose personnel worked to extricate victims trapped in the wreckage.
According to the GNFS, the crash involved a Mercedes-Benz container truck (registration WR 1553-C) travelling south from Nkwanta to Accra, and a Mercedes-Benz passenger bus (registration GR 3215-E) heading north from Battor toward Kabiti in the Oti Region.
Victim Demographics and Medical Response
A total of 40 passengers were caught in the collision, including 21 men, 15 women, and four children.
Firefighters from the Peki Fire Station rescued 25 injured individuals—comprising 23 adults and two children—and rushed them to the Peki Government Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
The 15 fatalities included nine men and six women.
Their bodies were handed over to the Ghana Police Service and conveyed to the Peki Government Hospital mortuary for preservation and identification.
Investigation and Safety Concerns
Authorities have yet to establish the exact cause of the accident.
A formal investigation by local police and highway safety officials is currently underway.
The tragedy underscores growing national concerns over road safety in Ghana.
Officials frequently cite speeding, dangerous overtaking, and driver fatigue as the leading contributors to fatal crashes on major trans-regional highways.
In an official statement, the GNFS extended its condolences to the bereaved families and issued an urgent appeal to motorists.
The Service urged drivers to follow heretraffic to fofollowtraffic regulations, avoid reckless driving practices, and exercise maximum caution to prevent further loss of life on the country’s roads.
