The Ashanti region has established itself as the powerhouse of Ghana’s livestock processing industry, slaughtering over 450 cattle alongside thousands of sheep and goats daily to meet surging commercial demand.
These figures, which significantly surpass the combined daily output of Accra and Tema, were announced by Alhaji Ibrahim Wahab Tikuma, the National Vice President of the Butchers Association and Ashanti Regional Chief Butcher.
Speaking on Adehye FM’s Ghana Ekosen morning show, Alhaji Tikuma disclosed that the regional capital, Kumasi, serves as the primary processing hub, accounting for approximately 300 cattle slaughter each day.
Operations are centralised at major facilities like the Kumasi and Suame abattoirs, though officials note that processing also continues at several unapproved locations.
By contrast, the Greater Accra region and Tema lag considerably behind, collectively processing fewer than 150 cattle daily.
According to Alhaji Tikuma, this stark volume difference highlights Kumasi’s strategic economic position as Ghana’s central livestock transit and trading hub, drawing supply from northern networks to feed local and regional markets.
To safeguard these supply chains, Alhaji Tikuma, urged butchers to use certified facilities like the Kumasi Abattoir and Suame Abattoir.
This, he said, ensures strict meat safety, proper waste management, and veterinary oversight as part of ongoing efforts to phase out unsanitary, unapproved slaughter sites.
