Residents and traders in the Ahafo Ano South-East Constituency have strongly opposed their Member of Parliament, Hon Mohammed Yakubu, over his decision to establish the government’s 24-hour Economy Market in Abesewa, his hometown, instead of the district capital, Adugyama.
The constituents have called on the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, to intervene promptly and ensure the project is relocated to Adugyama before President John Dramani Mahama officially commissions the construction later this week.
At a press conference on Sunday, 24th May 2026, Inusah Issifu, spokesperson for the group, emphasised that Abesewa is a small town with no urgent market needs, given its proximity to Bechem.
He warned that placing the facility there would cause unnecessary duplication of infrastructure, at the expense of Adugyama, which functions as the area’s commercial hub.
“Hundreds of traders transport produce from distant villages to Adugyama and are forced to display their goods on private residences or the bare ground in congested, unhygienic conditions,” Issifu stated, underscoring the infrastructural deficiencies in the town.
The group also criticised the District Chief Executive, Hon Ibrahim Yamba Nelson Issaka, accusing him of neglecting the interests of the local people.
Local traders have vowed to oppose any attempt to divert the project away from Adugyama.
Constituents argued that placing the market in Adugyama is the most practical decision to promote local economic growth, improve productivity, and address longstanding infrastructural neglect.
