A tragic explosion in the Binduri Forest has claimed the life of a young physical training instructor with the Sixth Infantry Battalion during a high-profile counter-terrorism training exercise.
The deceased has been identified by the military high command as 218079 Private Adotey.
The fatal incident occurred during “Exercise Storm Shield,” a specialised military simulation designed to strengthen the operational capabilities and readiness of security personnel responding to emerging violent extremist threats along Ghana’s northern borders.
Confirming the tragedy at the closing ceremony of the exercise, the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
He described Private Adotey as a remarkably dedicated and committed officer who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
“Exercise Storm Shield” was launched to fortify national security, particularly in border communities that face an increased vulnerability to violent extremism and spillover threats from the Sahel region.
While extending his deepest condolences to the bereaved family and colleagues of the fallen soldier, Major General Gbetanu emphasised that despite the tragedy, the military’s mission to protect the state remains unshakeable.
He reassured residents of border enclaves that operational readiness will not be compromised.
The Ghana Armed Forces has launched a full-scale investigation to determine the exact cause of the blast.
The military command has also reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting lives, securing the nation’s borders, and maintaining peace across the country.
