A delegation of senior female government appointees and political leaders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has paid a formal courtesy call on the Asantehemaa, Nana Yaa Akyaa II, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi to extend goodwill to the Queen Mother.
The delegation, led by Deputy Chief of Staff Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, included cabinet ministers, presidential staffers, female heads of security agencies, members of parliament, chief executive officers, and regional party executives.
Delivering the main address on behalf of the delegation, Ms Addo highlighted the 300-year legacy of the Asantehemaa stool, describing it as an enduring pillar of female authority and traditional governance.
”For more than 300 years since the founding of Asanteman, the stool of Asantehemaa has been carried around by women of great distinction,” Ms Addo stated, adding, “It is on the shoulders of this that your stool rests—a symbol of unity, courage, and an unbroken spirit.”
She paid homage to past occupants of the stool, including Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II and Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III, as well as the historic legacy of Nana Yaa Asantewaa, Queen Mother of Ejisu, whose resistance during the 1900 War of the Golden Stool remains a benchmark for women in leadership.
Quoting Yaa Asantewaa’s famous declaration to the Asante chiefs—”If you men of Asante will not go forward, then we will… We the women will”—Ms Addo emphasised that the new Asantehemaa’s reign must serve as a modern catalyst for social progress.
”Beyond being a unifier, your reign is also an arrowhead of bravery for all women,” she said, highlighting, “There are modern wars that our women, children, and the aged wage daily—domestic violence, harmful cultural practices, and the injustices that come with modern technology. Like Yaa Asantewaa, Nana Hemaa, we look to you for leadership.”
Ms Addo noted that the emergence of top-tier female traditional leadership coincides with historic milestones for women in national politics, calling it a strategic opportunity for collective action.
”This is more than a coincidence. It is a call from our ancestors for close partnership and unity among female leadership across traditional, social, and political sectors in our nation,” she added.
The Deputy Chief of Staff assured the Asantehemaa of the full support of female political leaders as she begins her tenure, expressing confidence that her leadership will meet the expectations of all Ghanaians.
