The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has stated that the strategic flood-mitigation measures implemented have successfully prevented major flooding despite recent heavy downpours in the metropolis.
According to the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon Ofori Agyeman Boadi, extensive desilting and unclogging of key drainage systems have significantly reduced the city’s vulnerability to seasonal rains.
The current heavy downpour “is not giving the city a headache,” Mayor Agyeman Boadi stated in an interview with the media at the KMA meeting today, attributing the relief to proactive engineering and sanitation interventions designed to clear major water channels.
Targeted Flood-Prone Areas
The KMA has undertaken massive desilting and de-logging exercises across several notorious flood hotspots, with work already completed or actively underway in Atafoa, the Amanfrom prisons area, and the Akatialine/WAEC zones.
The Mayor outlined that the next phase of the drain-clearing exercise will expand to target other critical sectors, including Nhyiaeso and the TUC residential area.
Changing the Narrative
Kumasi has historically suffered from perennial flooding during the peak of the rainy season, disasters that have previously displaced hundreds of residents and claimed lives.
However, the assembly’s shift toward proactive, preventative maintenance rather than reactive emergency response is beginning to alter that narrative.
Mr Boadi emphasised that the KMA remains committed to sustaining the desilting and de-logging campaign throughout the rainy season to permanently safeguard lives and property across the metropolis.
