Three officers from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) in the Ashanti region were injured during a demolition exercise at Kumasi Asafo, behind the COCOBOD building on Wednesday, 8th July 2026.
The operation was launched to clear structures obstructing drains and waterways and pave the way for the desilting of drainage systems ahead of the rainy season.
Residents occupying makeshift structures at the site heavily resisted the exercise.
Described by the KMA as illegal occupants, they allegedly attacked the task force and city guards with stones and other projectiles.
They also vandalised Assembly equipment, damaging a pick-up truck and an excavator.
Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, Kumasi Mayor, condemned the violence but assured the public that the attack would not deter the assembly’s flood prevention measures.
”There is no way I will sit down for illegality to overcome me,” the Mayor stated, adding that the damaged vehicles would be repaired and put back to work.
Mr Boadi also confirmed that the injured officers would receive medical treatment following police reports filed at the police station.
Meanwhile, some affected residents claimed they had acquired and paid for the land legitimately.
They strongly protested the operation, arguing they were given no prior notice to vacate and questioning where city authorities expected them to relocate.
