The Deputy Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Asokwa, Hon. Patricia Appiagyei, has expressed concern over low voter turnout at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Ashanti Regional Executive Elections, urging delegates to rush to polling centres before voting closes.
Speaking at the voting grounds at the Kumasi Jubilee Park, she commended the peaceful atmosphere and tight security presence but raised alarms over the slow pace of voting.
”The process has been very peaceful, well-organised, but currently, looking at the time, the timeframe is 8:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m and by 10:30 a.m, not even half of the voters have cast their ballots,” Mrs Appiagyei said, stating that “People must rush here and cast their votes: That is my concern.”
A total of 34 candidates are vying for 11 regional executive positions, with approximately 1,022 delegates expected to cast their ballots.
Appiagyei contrasted the current proceedings with past party events, praising law enforcement officers and delegates for maintaining order throughout the exercise.
”The security is so tight; everywhere you turn, you see security personnel,” she noted, adding that “If you remember last year, we had a lot of chaos, but today, it is very calm. That is the kind of progress we expected from such proceedings.”
Looking ahead to the party’s future leadership, the Asokwa MP emphasised the necessity of electing balanced, approachable leaders capable of re-energising the party’s grassroots ahead of upcoming national contests.
”I want to see a well-revitalised base,” Appiagyei stated, saying, “We need a good blend of executives. When everybody is calling for unity, we shouldn’t isolate groups. We need people who are affable, people-friendly, and who relate well with others to mobilise every base.”
