The Bank of Ghana has extended the registration deadline for all existing International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) operating in the country to 31st July 2026.
According to an official public notice released by the central bank, signed by the Secretary of the Bank, Ms Aimee Vyda Quashie, and dated 12th June 2026, existing IMTOs must regularise their operations and submit all required documentation under the current guidelines by the new mid-summer deadline.
The extension, detailed in Notice No. BG/GOV/SEC/2026/13 builds upon an earlier directive (Notice No. BG/GOV/SEC/2026/02) issued on 20th January 2026, regarding the formal registration and operation of international money transfer services within Ghana.
The central bank issued a strict warning to operators failing to meet the updated timeframe.
Any existing IMTO that does not comply with the registration requirements by 31st July 2026 will lose its permission to operate in the country.
Furthermore, the Bank of Ghana stated that any existing arrangements or partnerships between non-compliant IMTOs and local Banks, Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions (SDIs), or Payment Service Providers (PSPs) will be rendered null and void.
Unregistered entities remaining in operation past the deadline will face further regulatory and enforcement actions as prescribed by applicable Ghanaian laws.
Local regulated institutions, including banks and PSPs, have been directed to ensure strict adherence to the directive.
The official regulatory announcement advises operators seeking technical assistance or further inquiries to contact the Head of the Payment Systems Department at the Bank of Ghana.
