Residents along major corridors in Kumasi will experience temporary power outages between 9:00 am and 5:00pm as the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) execute critical infrastructure upgrades to stabilise the regional power grid.
The service interruptions, which will be managed on a rotational basis, section by section, to minimise inconvenience, authorities said, are part of a comprehensive transmission and distribution expansion programme expected to be completed by the end of this month —November 2026.
GRIDCo Chief Executive Officer Ing. Frank Asirifi Otchere and ECG Deputy Managing Director Ing. David Asamoah announced the developments during a joint briefing with Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene, and a subsequent inspection of the site today.
Ing. Otchere explained that GRIDCo is replacing an existing 360 MW transmission circuit with a high-capacity 1,000 MW line to resolve severe load constraints between generation sources and key distribution hubs.
The EU-AFD-funded project, he said, runs from the Anwomaso substation through Ahinsan, Kaase, Sewua, Asekyem, and Guinness, before terminating at the Ridge substation.
”When contractors get to a specific section along the corridor, affected communities will go out for maybe one or two days,” Ing. Otchere said, adding, “Even then, the outages are strictly contained within 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, ensuring power is restored to residents each evening.”
Ing. Otchere added that contractors have already decommissioned the old line, completed new reinforced tower foundations, and commenced stringing the upgraded high-capacity conductor, targeting full project completion by the end of November.
The work had been deferred earlier in the year following interventions by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition to avoid disruptions during the World Cup tournament.
Alongside the line upgrade, GRIDCo has commissioned a new 145 MVA transformer at the Ridge substation, replacing an older 66 MVA unit, and is constructing a fifth feeder to ECG, which will add roughly 80 MW of capacity by December to help serve both local load and demand in northern Ghana.
Complementing GRIDCo’s high-voltage operations, ECG has launched a priority crash programme to overhaul vital distribution lines across the region.
Ing. David Asamoah stated that ECG is prioritising urgent maintenance along high-demand corridors, including the Offinso, Barekese, and Bekwai routes, as well as the feeder line connecting Airport to the Anwomaso substation.
To meet the strict December deadline, he said, the ECG will temporarily increase its maintenance schedule to twice weekly, shifting from its standard once-weekly routine.
”All these projects are critical and cannot wait,” Ing. Asamoah emphasised, stating, “To complete them on schedule, we need to balance the workload by conducting maintenance twice a week. We urge our customers to understand the temporary discomfort as we work to prevent broader system failures.”
Ing. Asamoah assured consumers that ECG will adhere strictly to its policy of serving public notices at least 72 hours prior to scheduled outages.
Engineering teams, he said, will also use line jumpers and isolation points, such as isolating work near Barekese while keeping sections from Adoato through Suame energised, to restrict the geographic area affected by any power cuts.
For his part, Dr Frank Amoakohene, Ashanti Regional Minister, urged residents who will be affected by the temporary outages to bear with the authorities as the projects increase transmission capacity.
He also condemned theft, particularly in areas where new transmission lines are being erected, and said that security agencies would be informed to support the work.
