Several court users and litigants in the Ashanti Region were left stranded on Monday following an indefinite nationwide strike initiated by the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) over unapproved salary review recommendations for 2026.
The industrial action brought judicial activities to a halt, with court facilities, including the Court of Appeal, High Courts, and Circuit Courts in Kumasi Adum, locked and guarded by security.
Red cloths were displayed at court entrances, signalling the union’s strike.
The strike left many court users frustrated as scheduled hearings and legal filings were postponed without notice.
Desperate court users were seen making phone calls to their legal representatives to navigate the unexpected shutdown.
”I brought my case to court because I was scheduled to appear today, only to meet red cloth tied to the locked gate,” said one stranded court user.
Another affected litigant in Kumasi voiced concerns over the delay of urgent legal matters.
“It has affected us because some people are trying to take over our group property, which is why we came to court today for adjudication,” a litigant told Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah.
Affected court users appealed to the government to resolve their grievances, warning that prolonged closure of the courts will severely impact the administration of justice and public welfare.
”They should resolve their issues with urgency, just as they do for medical doctors when they go on strike,” one litigant urged.
