The Ashanti Regional Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Beatrice Owusu, has arranged legal representation and psychological counseling for alleged victims of sexual abuse linked to the interdicted headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai.
Speaking in an interview with Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah during a free breast cancer screening event at the Kumasi Racecourse Market, Ms Owusu revealed that she had traveled to Obuasi to meet with several victims and their families.
She stated that approximately 19 individuals across different towns are believed to have been affected, adding that she has directly spoken with five of them so far.
Ms Owusu demanded that the suspect, who reportedly serves as an officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and is vying for a constituency chairmanship in Juaben, face the full rigor of the law.
”I went to Obuasi yesterday. I’ve been speaking with the victims and their parents,” she said, adding, “I’ve engaged lawyers for them to pursue the case, and I know that… the law will take its course and he will be put behind bars if found guilty.”
Ms Owusu explained that prior to her intervention, the victims lacked the support and leadership needed to step forward.
In addition to legal counsel, she confirmed that medical examinations have been arranged and professional therapists engaged to assist in their recovery.
”I’ve gotten therapists for them, and we’ve taken them to the hospital to be examined,” she stated, highlighting,”With the counsel of the therapists, I know they are going to be fine.”
Emphasising that sexual abuse transcends political affiliations, the NPP Women’s Organiser called on women’s rights advocates and the general public to unite against sexual misconduct in schools nationwide.
”You can’t sit back and ignore it just because of political lines. Today, if it’s not your child, tomorrow it could be your daughter or granddaughter. We all have to come together to fight against this,” she urged.
