The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has commenced the demolition of structures situated on the right-of-way at Abrepo Junction to facilitate the ongoing construction of the Suame Interchange project.
The exercise, which began this morning, was executed by a joint team comprising armed military personnel and the KMA task force.
The operations aim to clear extensions of the interchange project route to ensure unhindered progress by contractors.
Traders and business owners were seen retrieving their goods and belongings as excavators leveled temporary structures erected along the earmarked corridor.
According to officials, affected occupants had received multiple notices to vacate the area voluntarily prior to the enforcement action.
While some traders complied with earlier directives, others remained on site until the arrival of the task force.
Adu Larbi Sampson, Transport Manager at the KMA, stated that the assembly adopted a measured approach to minimise property loss while ensuring compliance.
”We came here with the Mayor a few months ago. They have been warned several times to voluntarily remove their structures so that the right-of-way can be cleared for construction to progress,” Sampson said.
”However, as human as we are, we are giving those who want to salvage their goods the opportunity to voluntarily take them off,” he added.
Sampson noted that the affected traders have generally been cooperative during the process, acknowledging the previous warnings issued by municipal authorities.
He added that the enforcement team aims to minimise force and prevent unnecessary damage to personal property.
”We are not really using maximum force; we are trying to do things in a way that will not destroy too many properties,” he explained, adding that while authorities hope to complete the clearing as quickly as possible, operations may extend depending on equipment and personnel availability.
The Suame Interchange project, designed to ease chronic traffic congestion in Kumasi, includes key access corridors through Abrepo Junction. The first phase of the project has commenced following the completion of preliminary works.
Sampson confirmed that clearing operations will continue until all designated rights-of-way are fully secured for the contractors.
