The national leadership of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has convened an emergency meeting to review the 20-year sentence handed to Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
The high-level deliberations, which include the party’s Flagbearer and its legal team, aim to analyse the legal verdicts surrounding a controversial mining case in Samreboi and determine the party’s next line of action.
In a statement released on Monday, NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, confirmed the ongoing meeting, noting that the party is carefully evaluating the court’s decision before making its next move public.
”The leadership of the New Patriotic Party, together with our Flagbearer and the Party’s legal team, is currently in a meeting to thoroughly review the judgement delivered by the Court in the case involving our Ashanti Regional Chairman… concerning the Samreboi mining matter and to determine the appropriate next course of action,” Frimpong stated.
The party’s chief scribe assured members and the public that the NPP would communicate its official position and subsequent decisions once the deliberations are concluded.
Amid growing tension surrounding the legal outcome, Frimpong appealed for restraint within the party ranks, urging supporters to maintain internal cohesion and discipline.
”In the meantime, I respectfully urge all members of our great Party to rally behind the leadership during this challenging moment,” Frimpong added. “Let us remain calm, united, disciplined, and steadfast in our commitment to the values and interests of the New Patriotic Party.”
The court case stems from alleged mining activities linked to Chairman Wontumi in the Samreboi area, a matter that has drawn significant public and political scrutiny. The outcome of the emergency meeting is expected to signal how the ruling party intends to navigate the legal and political fallout ahead of the upcoming general elections.
