The Chief of Bomfa in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti region, Nana Kwaku Twumasi, has publicly disclosed his political allegiance, declaring his long-standing membership with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking at a public engagement organised by the District Chief Executive for Afigya Kwabre South at Ebom Bomfa, Nana Twumasi revealed that while he has been dedicated to the NDC for decades, his political journey actually began on the opposite side of the aisle.
He was originally a staunch supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) but defected during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Recalling his days as a youthful political activist during the late Jerry John Rawlings regime, the traditional ruler described himself as one of the young “boys” who physically carried bags of cement during aggressive NPP campaigns to protest the high cost of building materials under the NDC government.
He shared an incident from that intense campaign era when former President Kufuor took his campaign trail to Asawase in the Asawase Constituency.
According to Nana Twumasi, a tragic incident occurred during the rally, leaving three of his colleagues dead in a gutter, and he was the sole survivor of that tragedy.
Despite his deep-seated loyalty and sacrifices for the NPP, Nana Twumasi stated that his turning point came during the Kufuor presidency.
He decided to defect to the NDC on the specific day President Kufuor publicly admitted to Ghanaians that governance was far more difficult than he had anticipated, subsequently pleading for the nation’s patience.
Nana Twumasi expressed that after witnessing the intense promises made on the campaign trail, the former president’s admission left him profoundly disappointed, prompting his immediate exit from the party.
He recalled that his open alignment with the NDC sparked fierce resistance from within his own jurisdiction, noting that some residents even staged protests against his enstoolment due to his affiliation with the NDC.
Nana stated that Bomfa has deliberately been starved of critical infrastructure and socio-economic development simply because of politics.
