The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has issued a strict three-day ultimatum to the government, demanding the immediate reinstatement of the suspended Chief Executive Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The declaration follows an emergency meeting of the GMA’s National Executive Council (NEC) on Saturday, 6th June 2026.
The council met to address a 5th June 2026, directive from the Minister of Health ordering the KATH Board to suspend the hospital’s chief executive.
In a strongly worded statement, the GMA warned it will fully back a total withdrawal of medical services if the directive is not rescinded.
Doctors Mobilise for Strike Action
The GMA has thrown its full institutional weight behind the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association’s decision to stand down services until the ministry backs down.
Should the Ministry of Health refuse to comply within the three-working-day window, the GMA warned it is prepared to escalate the dispute nationwide.
”If such acts continue, the Association and its members will have no choice but to take remedial actions to ensure the sector does not degenerate into chaos,” the council stated.
GMA Defends Hospital Management, Rejects Ministry Query
The GMA contends that the ministry’s disciplinary actions are entirely without basis and ought not to have been occasioned.
Defending the embattled KATH management, the GMA detailed that hospital leadership did not abandon patients or flout presidential directives, but instead safely redirected inbound cases to neighboring facilities.
KATH specialists were also deployed to external regional facilities to maintain the quality of patient care.
In coordination with the Regional Health Directorate and the Regional Coordinating Council, this strategy successfully cleared the bottlenecked Accident & Emergency Centre, restoring normal admissions within 24 hours.
Minister Accused of Inciting Public Anger
The standoff has triggered a deep rift between healthcare professionals and political leadership.
The GMA leveled severe accusations against Health Minister Hon Kwabena Mintah Akandoh.
The association expressed utmost displeasure, claiming the Minister’s recent administrative actions and public rhetoric have directly and indirectly sought to incite public hostility against medical staff.
Furthermore, the GMA stated these actions have caused widespread, severe demotivation among healthcare professionals and contributed directly to a rise in incidents of physical violence against health workers.
The petition was officially signed and authorised by GMA President Prof Dr Ernest Yorke and General Secretary Dr Richard Selormey.
