The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has commenced talks with the Canadian Embassy and energy experts to address the critical operational and environmental challenges plaguing the Oti Landfill Site.
The initiative follows direct instructions from His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to find sustainable, long-term solutions to the city’s growing waste management pressures.
Diplomatic and Technical Engagement
As part of the directive, the Mayor of Kumasi, Hon. Richard Kwasi Ofori Boadi Agyemang, officially welcomed a high-level Canadian delegation to the Assembly.
The visiting team was led by Mr Craig Latimer, Chief Executive Officer of Portage Energy Group, a Canadian firm specialising in waste-to-energy technologies that convert municipal refuse into sustainable electrical and thermal energy.
The primary objective of the engagement is to explore a transition from traditional waste disposal to advanced waste-to-energy solutions, which could significantly improve local sanitation while generating development-focused power.
First-Hand Site Assessment
To accurately gauge the scale of the crisis, the delegation conducted a comprehensive tour of the Oti Landfill Site.
The field assessment allowed the technical team to observe current environmental vulnerabilities and operational bottlenecks first-hand.
During the tour, the Canadian representatives held technical briefings with the management of JSO Waste Ltd, the firm currently overseeing operations at the facility.
The discussions focused on understanding the site’s daily intake capacity, structural limitations, and immediate areas where international collaboration and technological integration could be deployed.
A Sustainable Outlook for Kumasi
This diplomatic and corporate engagement is a pivotal step in the KMA’s broader strategy to modernise its waste management infrastructure.
By leveraging Canadian technical expertise, the Assembly aims to mitigate the environmental hazards associated with the landfill, drastically improve urban sanitation, and create green economic opportunities for the residents of Kumasi.
