The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with security agencies, has arrested two men in connection with separate incidents involving inciteful and offensive religious statements captured on video.
The arrests involve 35-year-old Islamic preacher Masud Abdullah and Christian cleric Daniel Junior Yaw Adjei, also known as Apostle Daniel JY Adjei.
Both suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue.
Suspect Masud Abdullah, an Imam, was apprehended in a joint operation between the Police and the National Signals Bureau (NSB).
Authorities allege that Abdullah made statements advocating violence against anyone who speaks ill of Prophet Mohammed during a sermon at a mosque in Ntensere, located in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region.
In a related operation, the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team arrested Apostle Daniel JY Adjei after a video surfaced showing him making derogatory and offensive comments about Prophet Mohammed.
Police confirmed that both individuals will be processed for court and subjected to the due process of the law once investigations are completed.
In a statement following the arrests, the Ghana Police Service issued a stern warning to the public, particularly religious leaders, social media commentators, and community influencers.
The law enforcement agency emphasised that constitutional guarantees of religious freedom and free speech do not cover the incitement of violence or hate speech.
“Freedom of religion and freedom of expression must never be used as justification for inciting violence or encouraging members of the public to harm others,” the Police stated, warning that any individual who breaches these laws will be arrested and made to face the full rigours of the law.
