The Ahafo Ano South West District Assembly in the Ashanti region has launched a comprehensive disaster prevention initiative aimed at mitigating environmental risks and protecting lives and property across the district.
Speaking during the First Ordinary Meeting of the Assembly on Tuesday, 23rd June 2026, District Chief Executive (DCE) Hon Abubakar Sedik unveiled a multi-pronged strategy developed in partnership with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
Mapping Risks and Climate Action
A central pillar of the new strategy is a proactive hazard-mapping exercise targeting the district’s most flood-prone communities.
By identifying vulnerable zones before the heavy rains hit, the Assembly plans to guide local infrastructure development and streamline emergency evacuation routes.
Alongside geographic mapping, Hon Sedik announced targeted climate change interventions designed to insulate local agriculture and livelihoods from increasingly erratic and extreme weather patterns.
Education and Emergency Relief
To ensure communities are active participants in their own safety, the Assembly and NADMO are intensifying public education campaigns.
These community-level forums will focus on practical safety measures, structural reinforcement, and early-warning signs.
For instances where disasters cannot be averted, the DCE confirmed that the Assembly is actively procuring emergency relief supplies to ensure immediate food, shelter, and medical support reach affected families without bureaucratic delays.
A Shared Responsibility
Hon Sedik stressed that building geographic resilience cannot be achieved by local government alone, calling on community leaders, residents, and local stakeholders to cooperate fully with NADMO field officers.
”Disaster prevention is a shared responsibility,” Hon Sedik emphasised, reiterating the Assembly’s commitment to sustained investment in public safety, education, and climate preparedness to build a safer Ahafo Ano South West District.
Call for Unity
Hon Sedik called on members of the District Assembly to put their partisan and personal interests aside and work together for the progress of the district.
He expressed satisfaction with the district’s progress, emphasising that the achievements made were a result of collective effort and should not be credited to one individual.
