In a major boost to school hygiene and public health, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahafo Ano South West, Hon Abubakar Sedik, has officially commissioned and handed over four newly constructed institutional latrine facilities to selected basic schools across the district.
The project aims to eliminate inadequate sanitation infrastructure, safeguard student dignity, and foster a healthier learning environment.

Beneficiary Schools and Hygiene Support
The modern facilities were handed over to four key educational clusters in the district, specifically Wioso D/A JHS and Primary, Barniekrom D/A JHS and Primary, Kunsu D/A JHS and Primary, and Afresini D/A JHS and Primary.
To ensure immediate usability and promote proper handwashing habits, each institution was also supplied with essential hygiene products, including toilet rolls, tissues, and liquid soap.

Funded for the Future
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Hon Sedik revealed that addressing poor school sanitation was one of his topmost priorities upon assuming office.

”The lack of decent sanitation infrastructure demanded immediate intervention to safeguard the health and dignity of both pupils and teachers,” Hon Sedik stated.
The DCE explained that the projects were funded through the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF).
He further assured residents that this is part of a broader, phased agenda to upgrade educational infrastructure, promising that similar facilities would soon be extended to other underserved schools in the district.

Inclusive and Accessible Design
In a significant stride toward inclusive education, Hon Sedik highlighted that the new facilities feature disability-friendly accessibility options.
This ensures that all students, regardless of their physical abilities, can access safe and dignified sanitation.
A Call for Collective Maintenance
Sustainability was the central theme of the event.
Hon Sedik urged teachers, Assembly Members, parents, and students to take collective ownership of the infrastructure.

He strictly cautioned against unauthorised use by the general public to ensure the facilities last for future generations.
Echoing the DCE’s sentiments, the District Director of Education, Justin Kwesi Gbotor, announced that dedicated management committees will be established at each school to oversee daily maintenance.
”Effective supervision and shared responsibility are the keys to long-term sustainability,” Mr Gbotor noted, encouraging students to cultivate lifelong hygiene habits to complement the new infrastructure.
Dignitaries in Attendance
The colorful commissioning ceremony brought together key local stakeholders to witness the handover.
Alongside the DCE, the delegation included the Presiding Member, the District Coordinating Director, the District Director of Education, and various management members from both the District Assembly and the District Education Directorate.
