In a rescheduled election held on Sunday, 12 July 2026, heavily guarded by armed police following a weekend outbreak of violence, Kingsley Atta has overwhelmingly won the Bantama constituency chairmanship of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), unseating the incumbent chairman, Fiifi Mensah.
Atta garnered a decisive victory by securing 714 votes, representing 72.8% of the 995 valid votes cast, while Mensah managed to secure only 267 votes, representing 27.2%.
The internal party election was originally scheduled to take place on Saturday, 11 July 2026, at the Kumasi Cultural Centre.
However, the processes were violently disrupted when about seven heavily built men stormed the venue.
The attackers destroyed ballot papers, plastic tables, and chairs, forcing the election to be cancelled.
One individual was injured during the melee, and police subsequently declared the venue a crime scene.
The police arrested three suspects in connection with the violence, including incumbent constituency organiser Shaibu Bamba, Adoata polling station chairman Abubakar Abdullah, and a third individual.
Despite the weekend chaos, NPP leadership successfully resolved to hold the rescheduled poll; however, the Electoral Commission (EC) did not supervise the process.
Instead, the NPP’s internal electoral committee managed the voting independently after three party members allegedly secured a court injunction, claiming their names had been unlawfully expunged from the official voters’ album.
The election also saw a fresh slate of constituency executives chosen to steer the party forward.
Joining Chairman Atta on the new executive body are 1st Vice Chairman Kofi Amoateng, 2nd Vice Chairman Frank C. Boateng, Secretary Douglas Achempong, Assistant Secretary Kwadwo Adu, and Organiser Eric Mensah.
The remaining leadership positions were filled by Youth Organiser Nana Boakye, Treasurer Vivian Arthur, Women’s Organiser Josephine Ama Pomaa, and Communication Officer Kingsley Addai.
Following his official declaration as winner, the newly elected Chairman, Kingsley Atta, promised to bridge deep internal divides and unite both factions, along with their respective supporters, in a strategic effort to maximise the party’s voter mobilisation ahead of the 2028 general elections.
