The Action People’s Party (APP) has called on the public to boycott a planned demonstration by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), describing the protest as an unnecessary and unjustified distraction.
The NPP’s demonstration, themed “Ghana Under Attack,” is scheduled for tomorrow to protest the detention of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s national headquarters at Mile 7 in Accra on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, APP Founder and Leader, Kenneth Nana Kwame Asamoah, urged Ghanaians to ignore the rally, arguing that it misrepresents the reality of the country’s democratic climate and risks damaging economic stability.
”Today’s Ghana is not under attack. Our democracy is functioning, there is peace across the country, and state institutions are operating,” Mr Asamoah said. “The suggestion that Ghana is under attack is misleading and does not represent the reality on the ground.”
Mr Asamoah maintained that the NPP’s current legal and political challenges stem from internal inconsistencies and indiscipline rather than state suppression.
He urged the opposition party to allow the judicial process to proceed without taking to the streets.
Beyond domestic political friction, the APP leader warned that staging protests to depict Ghana as unstable could undermine investor confidence and harm economic growth at a critical period for national recovery.
Addressing democratic credentials, Mr Asamoah rejected claims that the current administration poses a threat to governance.
He countered that genuine threats to the judiciary occurred under the previous NPP administration led by former President Nana Akufo-Addo, citing an incident in Kumasi where a female judge was attacked in her courtroom by a political vigilante group.
Reiterating the party’s faith in the judiciary, the APP called on all political actors to respect the rule of law, exercise restraint, and avoid escalating political tensions.
