A political and social group calling itself the Ashanti Democrats has officially petitioned the Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to launch a thorough, independent investigation into allegations of illegal mining in the Ahafo Ano South East District.
The petition, dated Friday, 15 July 2026, urges the police to establish the facts surrounding recent public accusations of illegal mining activities in the area, citing severe concerns over environmental degradation, the erosion of public confidence, and the threat to the rule of law.
The group, led by its President, Jerry James Sukah, explicitly requested that the CID invite vlogger Amaru Shakur to assist the police with their investigations.
Shakur recently published a viral story concerning the alleged illegal mining activities in the district.
The Ashanti Democrats noted that Shakur should be formally asked to provide any evidence, footage, or information currently in his possession regarding the allegations to help expedite the investigation.
The petition also highlighted that two high-profile figures—the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Hon Mohammed Yakubu, and the District Chief Executive (DCE), Ibrahim Yamba-Nelson—have both publicly and vehemently denied any involvement in the alleged illegal mining operations.
According to the group, a comprehensive inquiry by the CID is absolutely necessary to ensure justice, fairness, and transparency, given the weight of the allegations and the public denials by the MP and the DCE.
”We trust that the CID will treat this petition with the urgency and professionalism it deserves, taking all necessary steps to ensure that the facts are established in accordance with the laws of the country,” Sukah said when speaking to the media after filing the petition.
