Twelve people have been confirmed dead and several others injured in a devastating three-vehicle collision on the Accra-Kumasi Highway at Konongo-Odumasi in the Ashanti region.
The deceased comprise eight adult males, three females, and a five-year-old boy in the tragic crash that occurred at approximately 11:00 PM on Wednesday,15 July 2026.
Nine of the victims were passengers aboard a commercial bus, while all three occupants of a cargo truck died on impact.
The crash involved a DAF Cargo truck with registration number AS 3030- 23, loaded with tomatoes heading from Kumasi toward Accra, a DAF commercial bus with registration number GS 3392-24, carrying passengers from Accra to Kumasi, and an empty DAF fuel tanker.
ASP Frank Asare Awuah, the Konongo Divisional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), told Kumasi FM’s Elisha Adarkwah that investigations indicate that the driver of the DAF Cargo truck attempted a failed overtaking manoeuvre, resulting in a head-on collision with the oncoming commercial bus.
The empty fuel tanker, which was travelling closely behind the cargo truck, was also partially affected by the impact of the crash.
ASP Awuah confirmed that a swift joint rescue operation by the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the National Ambulance Service, a road safety towing crew, and the police managed to clear the wreckage and evacuate the victims.
Currently, 13 of the injured survivors are receiving emergency care at the Steward Hospital in Yawkwai, while several other victims have been admitted to the Konongo Government Hospital for medical treatment.
