Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed deep grief over the passing of the King of the Dagbon Kingdom, Ndan Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II.
In an official statement released on Monday, 13 July 2026, Dr Bawumia extended his sincere condolences to the chiefs and people of Dagbon, describing the monarch’s death as a profound loss not only to the kingdom but to Ghana as a whole.
Dr Bawumia praised the late King for his transformative leadership, noting that Ndan Ya-Na Abukari II ascended to the throne during one of the most challenging periods in Dagbon’s history.
Despite a relatively short reign, the King was credited with guiding the ancient kingdom toward peace, unity, and prosperity through ancestral wisdom and patience.
He added that the monarch united families once broken, healed a fractured society, perfectly blended tradition with modernity, and consistently lobbied for major developmental projects in the region.
Reflecting on his personal relationship with the late ruler, Dr Bawumia shared that he benefited immensely from the King’s counsel during his tenure as Vice President and throughout his presidential campaign.
He described paying homage at the ancient Gbewaa Palace as an honour that always provided him with immeasurable wisdom and guidance.
The statement concluded with a prayer for solace, asking that Allah comfort the immediate family, the chiefs and people of Dagbon, and Ghana as a whole during this painful affliction.
