The Adenta Circuit Court on Tuesday, 23rd June 2026, granted a GH¢500,000 bail with two sureties each to Israel Kwadwo Safo Akofena and eight others over their alleged involvement in a violent shooting incident that left former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament (MP) Sarah Adwoa Safo injured.
The suspects, who appeared before the court following their arrest, face charges related to the violent disturbances.
The case has been adjourned to a later date for further proceedings.
Arrests and Weapon Retrievals
Akofena, who is the younger brother of former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament (MP) Sarah Adwoa Safo, reported himself to the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters on Monday, 22nd June 2026, a day after the incident.
He was subsequently handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for interrogation.
A subsequent police search conducted at Akofena’s residence and vehicle in Kwabenya led to the retrieval of two Glock pistols—one of which is registered in his name—loaded magazines, and a cache of ammunition.
The seized ammunition includes 120 rounds of 9mm, 50 rounds of .45 calibre, and 25 rounds of .40 calibre bullets.
Two other suspects, Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson, were also arrested, bringing the total number of accused persons to nine.
The remaining six suspects are private security personnel who were detained by the police directly at the scene of the shooting on Sunday, 21st June 2026.
Root Cause of Tensions
Police investigations reveal that the violent incident stems from a long-standing leadership and succession dispute within the Kristo Asafo Mission.
Tensions within the church have escalated since the passing of its founder, Apostle Kwadwo Safo, on 11th September 2025.
The ongoing family and administrative dispute centres on the succession arrangements of the mission, which ultimately culminated in Sunday’s shooting incident.
Meanwhile, the police state that investigations into the matter are still ongoing to bring all perpetrators to book.
