The Ministry of Health has officially queried and summoned the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) following management’s decision to halt new patient admissions at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency (A&E) Centre.
In a letter dated 3rd June 2026, the Ministry ordered the KATH CEO to appear before the Minister of Health on Thursday, 4th June 2026, at 12:00 p.m.
The CEO is expected to explain why disciplinary actions should not be taken against him for allegedly violating an active presidential directive.
According to the official correspondence signed by Desmond Boateng, Chief Director for the Ministry of Health, the hospital’s decision flatly contradicts an explicit directive from President Mahama, which strictly prohibits public hospitals from turning away emergency cases.
Social Media Reports and Official Confirmation
The Ministry’s urgent intervention was triggered by widespread social media reports captioned, “KATH ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY CENTRE FULL AND UNABLE TO ADMIT NEW CASES – MANAGEMENT.”
Government concerns were further validated after the Head of Public Affairs at KATH appeared on Channel 1 TV News to publicly confirm management’s decision to halt new emergency admissions due to severe capacity constraints.
Administrative Breaches and Impending Sanctions
The Ministry is treating the development as a serious administrative breach.
“You are by this letter requested to appear before the Hon Minister of Health… to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against you for contradicting a clear directive of H.E. the President of the Republic of Ghana,” the letter stated.
The outcome of Thursday’s high-stakes meeting is expected to determine whether the Ministry will overhaul admission protocols at the major referral facility or issue direct sanctions against the CEO.
