An Accra court has issued a final deadline of 28th May 2026, for legal counsel representing Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, to produce additional witnesses in his ongoing criminal trial.
The directive was issued in the case Republic v. Bernard Antwi Boasiako & 2 Others after defence counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi requested an extension following testimony already delivered by Chairman Wontumi.
Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai strongly opposed the defence’s request, noting that the legal team had previously assured the court that their witnesses would be ready this week.
Srem-Sai argued against a further adjournment, pointing out that no witness statements had been filed.
He also reminded the court that standard legal procedures permit a trial to be closed if witnesses fail to appear for cross-examination.
Despite the state’s objection, the presiding judge granted the defence a final extension.
However, the court explicitly warned that if the witnesses are not presented by the Thursday deadline, it will conclude that the defence has rested its case.
Under those circumstances, the court will order final addresses before setting a date for judgment.
