Residents of Antwi-Agyeikrom in the Achiase electoral area of the Asunafo North Municipality in the Ahafo region have appealed to the government to build a bridge across the River Bia.
The lack of a bridge, they said, endangers the lives of school children and community members daily.
The River Bia, which links parts of the Asunafo North Municipality and the Western North region, has become a significant obstacle for residents.
Pupils of Antwi-Agyeikrom M/A Basic School from KG1 to JHS3 are particularly affected, risking their safety each day as they cross the river to access education.

Currently, without a bridge, villagers resort to crossing on tree trunks, in unsafe canoes, or wading through the water, especially during the dry season.
Heavy rains swell the river, making crossings perilous and sometimes preventing children from attending school while increasing the risk of drowning.
This situation has elicited concern from traditional leaders, parents, teachers, farmers, and other residents.

They argued that the absence of a footbridge compromises safety and hampers socio-economic activities.
Nana Pokuaa Agyemang, Queen Mother of Antwi-Agyeikrom, described the situation as unacceptable and called on authorities to construct a durable footbridge, emphasising that school children should not risk their lives for education.

Farmers who transport cocoa, cassava, plantain, and other produce to markets also face difficulties crossing the river, especially during the rainy season.
School officials noted that attendance drops when the river overflows, as many parents fear for their children’s safety and keep them home.
Children crossing the river daily voiced their plea to the government to repair the bridge, citing constant danger and life-threatening situations.
They stressed that building a bridge would greatly improve access to education, healthcare, transportation, and boost the community’s overall development.
