Concerns are mounting over the health and welfare of the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, following claims that his condition has significantly deteriorated while in detention by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).
Kwesi Botchway Jnr, a member of the NPP communications team, shared the alarming update on his Facebook page on May 17, 2026. According to Botchway Jnr, he received a “distress call” from Abronye DC’s wife, who expressed serious worries about her husband’s state.
“I’ve just received a ‘distress’ call from his wife. She tells me his condition has deteriorated significantly. She also informs me that she was only granted access to him yesterday after being denied since Wednesday,” Botchway Jnr wrote.
The NPP communicator further alleged that Abronye DC has been denied fundamental rights since his detention. “Abronye has neither eaten nor taken his medications since his detention,” Botchway Jnr claimed, adding that he has reportedly been denied legal counsel, family visits, food, and essential medical care.
Botchway Jnr also raised concerns about the legal process, stating, “It’s also concerning that Abronye’s legal team has still not received the record of proceedings, despite formally requesting it on the day of his detention.” He questioned the potential consequences for the government if Abronye DC’s health continues to worsen.
Charges and Remand
Abronye DC was detained over remarks he allegedly made about a Circuit Court judge. He faces one count of publication of false news and one count of offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace.
He has been remanded by the BNI for two weeks, with proceedings expected to continue on May 27, 2026. The allegations by Botchway Jnr have fueled public debate and raised questions about the conditions of detention and adherence to due process.
